Malachite

Major Origins

Zambia, Australia, the United States, China (Yangchun City, Guangdong Province)

Material Properties

Named “Peacock Stone” for its vibrant green hues and dazzling patterns resembling peacock feathers, its English name “Malachite” derives from the Greek word mallache (meaning “green”).

A copper-bearing carbonate mineral of the monoclinic crystal system, it typically forms slender prismatic or needle-like crystals. It exhibits banded patterns, radial structures, concentric layers, and fibrous textures, with pleochroism showing colorless, yellow-green, and green shades. Brittle and lacking toughness, it often forms conchoidal to irregular fractures.
