Amethyst
1. Introduction
Amethyst is a light to deep purple variety of the quartz family, due to its iron content, and its chemical composition is silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It is known as a “spiritual guardian stone.” Natural amethyst forms in pores of volcanic rocks and hydrothermal veins, and is found mainly in Brazil, Uruguay, and Zambia. Completely transparent deep purple crystals (such as “Royal Purple” from Uruguay) are considered the most valuable.
2. The meaning of amethyst
2.1 What is amethyst?
Derived from the ancient Greek word amethystos, meaning “drunken stone,” it has traditionally been used to ward off alcoholism. Purple symbolizes spiritual awakening and resonates with the crown and third eye chakras, making it a popular tool for meditation and intuitive development.
2.2 Is amethyst natural?
Natural amethyst often contains colored or tiger striped inclusions, and when heated above 450°C it turns into citrine. There is also synthetic amethyst on the market, which is made by hydrothermal methods and can be identified by the shape of the internal inclusions.
3. The effects of amethyst
Amethyst has the dual effect of harmonizing the energies of the body and mind, calming the nervous system and invigorating spiritual awareness, earning it the nickname “nature’s emotional stabilizer.”
4. The healing properties of amethyst
Physiologically, Amethyst relieves migraines, tinnitus, and hormonal imbalances. Psychologically, it suppresses obsessive thoughts and promotes deep sleep. Placing it under your pillow can help reduce nightmares, and holding it while meditating can help you receive higher spiritual guidance.
5. Amethyst Healing Properties
Amethyst’s hexagonal crystal structure makes it a powerful energy transducer, raising low frequency vibrations to higher spiritual frequencies. In Christian tradition it symbolizes divine wisdom and is often found in bishops’ rings. In Buddhism it is associated with the Bodhisattva Kannon and is used to enhance compassion.
6. Amethyst vs Kunzite
• Kunzite: A variety of lithium mineral, hardness 6.5-7, pink-purple, focuses the heart chakra and is primarily for emotional healing.
• Amethyst: Hardness 7, has a wide violet spectrum, activates the third eye and crown chakras, focuses on cognitive breakthroughs and spiritual protection. Amethyst’s “energy shield” properties make it superior to many healing stones as it prevents the intrusion of electromagnetic fields and negative energies.
