Lapis Lazuli

Main Origins
Afghanistan, Russia, Chile, Canada
Material Characteristics / Material
The name Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin word lapis (stone) and lazuli, a Persian dialect term from the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan, meaning “blue.” Together, the term signifies “blue stone.”
As a craft material, it has been known as “blue gold” in Chinese, and in ancient China, it was also referred to as Jinbi (gold and jade), Diandai (dot indigo), and Biliuli (jade-glass-like blue gem).
Lapis Lazuli belongs to the isometric crystal system. While it occasionally forms rhombic dodecahedrons or cubic crystals, it is most commonly found in dense, massive, or granular aggregates.
It is a cluster compound that typically exhibits deep blue or violet hues, and sometimes sky blue or greenish-blue tones.
History & Culture
Western Culture
Lapis Lazuli has long been believed to possess the power to ward off evil spirits and has been used as a talisman for protection against negative energy.
It is also treasured as a stone that brings peace and good fortune.
Buddhism
Lapis Lazuli is one of the “Seven Treasures” in Buddhism and is known as Vaiḍūrya or Biliuli in Chinese.
Its deep blue color symbolizes the body of the Medicine Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism, representing healing power and compassion.
Ancient Egypt & Babylon
Lapis Lazuli was revered as a symbol of nobility, divinity, and authority, frequently used in royal ornaments and ceremonial artifacts.
It famously adorned the golden mask of the young pharaoh Tutankhamun and other artifacts found in his tomb.
China
In ancient China, the “heavenly blue” of Lapis Lazuli was highly favored by emperors.
During rituals at the Temple of Heaven, emperors wore ceremonial beads made from Lapis Lazuli.
In the Qing Dynasty, the gemstone was also used as a hat decoration for fourth-rank officials, symbolizing good fortune, nobility, authority, and auspicious omens.

When to Use / Time
When close relationships are under strain
During family gatherings or discussions about important domestic matters, disagreements and heightened emotions can sometimes create communication barriers among family members.
For example, when parents clash over differing views on their child’s education, both sides may become so focused on asserting their own opinions that they fail to consider each other’s feelings, causing the conversation to become unproductive or emotionally charged.
During presentations or public speaking
In the workplace, people often experience nervousness and pressure when delivering project reports, business presentations, or training sessions.
For instance, an employee may feel overwhelmed before presenting a key project proposal to supervisors or colleagues, worrying about failure or difficult questions. This anxiety can result in trembling voices or speech blocks during the presentation.
In self-exploration or sharing settings
Workshops focused on personal growth or deep conversations among friends often require sharing one’s thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
However, many people hesitate to speak openly due to embarrassment, fear of judgment, or uncertainty about whether their thoughts are appropriate for the setting, which may lead them to hold back their true feelings.
