The name “Larimar” was coined by its discoverer, Miguel Méndez, by combining his daughter Larissa’s name with the Spanish word “mar” (meaning “sea”), symbolizing its “unrivaled blue”—a hue reminiscent of the ocean. Larimar features a blend of blue-green and white tones, resembling waves blooming on the sea (hence its alternate name: “Sea Stone”).
Its primary composition is sodium calcium silicate, belonging to the triclinic crystal system, and typically appears in white, light blue, blue, or deep blue shades. The blue portions consist entirely of pectolite, while the white areas are a mix of pectolite and calcite (calcium carbonate).
