In 1967, members of the Maasai tribe in Tanzania accidentally discovered this gemstone. Later, Tiffany & Co. of the United States recognized its potential for international sales and named it “Tanzanite” in honor of the newly established Republic of Tanzania. The mineral name of tanzanite is zoisite, belonging to the epidote group. It is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral with the chemical formula Ca₂Al(Si0)(SiO,)O(OH). It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, forming columnar or tabular prismatic crystals with parallel striations and a nearly hexagonal cross-section. It also occurs as aggregates of columnar grains. Common colors include blue, bluish-purple, and green.
