Named for its resemblance to pine cones and its pine-green hue, it was officially referred to as “Lü Song Shi” (绿松石, green pine stone) in China during the Qing Dynasty. The English name “Turquoise” originates from the 13th-century French term pierre turquoise, and in Chinese, it is also translated as “Turkish jade.” This is because it was initially transported to Europe via Turkey, leading to the mistaken belief that it originated there.
Turquoise is a hydrous copper aluminum phosphate mineral belonging to the triclinic crystal system. It typically appears in fine veins or crust-like formations, with a glassy or waxy luster. Its color varies depending on copper and iron content—higher copper levels result in a bluer hue, while higher iron content produces a greener tone.
History & Culture
China: Regarded as a sacred stone of happiness and auspiciousness, it is counted among the “Four Famous Jades of China.” A symbol of victory and success, it was historically used as adornment by royalty and nobility. In Tibetan regions, it is treasured as a representation of good fortune and blessings.
Ancient Egypt: Frequently used in burial artifacts, it was carved as treasures protected by the goddess of love.
Ancient Persia: It was believed that seeing turquoise first thing in the morning would bring luck for the day. Wearing it around the neck or wrist was also a custom to ward off illness and pray for happiness.
Native American Regions: Turquoise was considered the spirit of the sea and sky, believed to bring blessings and good fortune to warriors setting out on expeditions. It is a stone of success and luck, as well as a symbol of power and status.
Middle East: Known as the “Stone of Luck,” wearing turquoise is believed to bring happiness and joy.
